If you're looking for a new model prices start at just over $21k, making it a little more expensive than other entry-level sedans of a similar calibre. It does offer 5 doors however, as well as a decent 1.8 L engine. The manual offers 6 speeds, with the automatic equivalent offering 7 – but both take unleaded petrol and feature 4 cylinders, so you're unlikely to tell the difference once on the road.
There's also the ANCAP rating of 4 to consider, which although is still acceptable – it is a little strange to see it fail to reach a full 5, what with its hatchback frame and sturdy construction. It's also quite energy hungry and has been given a 3.5 rating on that front, but we think that a lot of that has to do with its total mass of 310.5 kg – and that's before passengers climb aboard.
The Corolla Ascent ZRE152R isn't short of features and functions, in fact the model offers a pollen filter built into the air conditioning system, a 6 speaker stereo, antilock brakes and electro-hydraulic power steering that offers complete control. The addition of a subtle spoiler (located at the rear of the roof) plays a minimal role on the road, but there's no denying that it just looks great.
Another reason why we can't understand the 4 star ANCAP rating relates to the Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system in place as standard on this model – a system that is commonly found in more expensive vehicles. And just in case you aren't a fan of Bluetooth functions, USB slots or iPod input, there's also the added bonus of the time-proven CD system.
There's no denying that the Ascent looks as good on the road as it does when parked up. Its fluid design might not resemble the blockier aesthetic that's becoming the norm these days, but what more do you expect from a 2012 model? The seating is comfortable, the car is available in a variety of colours and the grill speaks of a time where a blended bonnet took precedent over chrome alternatives.
All in all, a great car that would benefit a small family (thanks to the 5 doors), or even a fleet of office vehicles – as long as someone else is paying the fuel charge.
